Ofcom updates compliance checklist for community radio stations

Ofcom has issued updated guidance reminding community radio stations of their compliance responsibilities. The revised checklist sets clearer expectations on language use and studio location.

The updated compliance checklist was published in Bulletin 518 and replaces earlier separate documents covering television and radio broadcasters.

The regulator has clarified expectations around language requirements within a station’s character of service. Where a specific language is listed, stations are expected to broadcast some programming in that language each week. Stations may still air content in other languages provided the named language remains the main one used.

The guidance also addresses studio location. Ofcom states that having a studio within the licensed coverage area supports the delivery of social gain. It highlights the importance of physical facilities in enabling community access, participation and training opportunities.

The updated principles apply to analogue community radio services on AM and FM as well as digital community stations operating on small scale DAB.

Further details and the full compliance checklist are available through Ofcom.
