Ofcom publishes updated Local Election guidance for 2026

Ofcom has released updated guidance to support broadcasters covering elections taking place on 7 May. The document outlines how stations should assess electoral support and maintain due impartiality.

The regulator has published a revised digest of evidence of past and current electoral support to assist editorial decision-making during the campaign period.

The guidance is intended to help broadcasters apply due impartiality when planning election-related programming, including interviews, debates and wider political coverage.

The digest summarises trends in electoral support and explains the factors Ofcom considers when assessing whether coverage complies with the Broadcasting Code.

Polls scheduled for 7 May include elections to the Welsh Parliament, known as Senedd Cymru, and the Scottish Parliament. Local and mayoral elections are also due to take place in parts of England.

Ofcom states the document is designed as a reference point for newsrooms and programme teams when making editorial judgements during the election period.
